What is Google Raspberry Pi?

Raspberry Pi is a computer of credit card size. It was created by Eben Upton. It was initially designed for the educational purpose. These computers are slower than the modern computers and laptops of today. The language used in this computer is Linux. It is a complete computer with small size and with a very low price. Google teamed up with Raspberry Pi to give us the most exciting project – Google Raspberry Pi – Your very own home-made Google Assistant.

People all around the world are enjoying and taking advantage of its size, cost, programmability, and portability. Raspberry Pi is an open hardware.

Google has teamed up with the Raspberry Pi to make the most exciting project of the decade ” Google Raspberry Pi”, Home-made Google Assistant which can talk to you and get answers to your queries. The Same tech is used in the Google Home. The companies have released the kit which transforms the Raspberry pi into the virtual computer. It contains a Voice Hat (Hardware Accessory on Top) board with a speaker and microphone thus providing the Pi owners with all they need for making a virtual computer who can talk to them as well.

Now build your own Google assistant out of a cardboard

To build a Google assistant out of a cardboard is really easy. Just some steps to follow and you can create your own Google Raspberry PI assistant which can talk to you. It is a little cupboard which is powered by Raspberry Pi.

Materials Required

You will receive a voice kit and what you have to do is to verify the list of materials which are there in the kit. Make sure that all the materials are present in the kit. The kit will contain:

  • Voice HAT Accessory Board
  • Voice HAT microphone board
  • 5-wire daughter board cable
  • Plastic Standoffs
  • 3” speaker (wire attached)
  • 4-wire button cable
  • Arcade Style push button
  • External cardboard box
  • Internal cardboard frame
  • Micro-switch
  • Lamp holder
  • Lamp

Steps to fix the Assembly

You are guided here, how to assemble the Google Raspberry Pi voice kit. The voice kit includes the Voice HAT, Raspberry Pi 3 Board, Cardboard form, and other components. The first step in making Google Raspberry Pi – Google Assistant is to work with the hard board and then will continue with the box settings.

Step 1:

Get your Raspberry Pi 3 and the two standoffs. Now insert the plastic standoffs into the yellow holes on the board which is opposite to the 40-pin box header. Fix them in the place accurately.

Now attach your Voice HAT board with the Raspberry box header. Check whether the things are rightly fixed.

Step 3

Now attach the speakers to the board. Insert the red wire of the speaker with the “+” terminal on the Voice HAT blue screw connector. Now insert the black wire into the “-“ terminal. Now Screw the wires in place with a screwdriver. Gently tug the wire to check that the wires are screwed tightly.

Step 4

Now see the 4-wire button cable. This cable will have the four separate wires at one end and the white plug on the other end. Connect the plug to the white connectors on the Voice Hat board.

Step 5

Now take out the 5-wire daughter board cable and Voice HAT Microphone board from the kit. Insert this 5-wire plug into the Voice HAT Microphone board.

Step 6

The last step for the hardboard assembly is to connect the Microphone board to the Voice Hat board using the other white connector on the Hat board.

Build the Box

To build the box, check for the larger cardboard piece with holes on one side. Fold it along the creases, after that find the side with four flaps and fold the one marked Fold 1, the do the same for all three remaining sides.

Build the Frame

To build the frame, following steps should be followed.

Step 1

Take the other cardboard piece out from the kit. It will be used for the inner frame to hold the hardware. Flaps will be labeled, Fold the creases accordingly.

The flap which is above folds labeled as 1 and 2 has a U-shaped cutout. Push it out.

Now fold the remaining flap outward. Fold the portion which is labeled “Fold Up”. There is a small notch at the back of the U-shaped flap to keep it in place.

The U-shaped flap should lay with the box side. At this moment, the cardboard might not be in the shape. Once the steps are completed the box will come in shape.

Step 5

Now take the speakers which you have already connected to the Raspberry board. Fix the speaker into the U-shaped pocket you have made on the cardboard frame.

Step 6

Take the Voice Hat hardware and Pi and fix them onto the bottom of the frame below the flap 1 and 2. It is necessary that the ports on the board are exposed from the cardboard frame.

Now the two parts of the cardboard will be fixed together.

TIP: Remove the SD card before inserting the parts because it may break.

 You have assembled the cardboard box earlier. Now take it and find the side with the holes in it. These holes are for the speaker. Now move the frame you made and the hardware in the box. Make sure that the speakers are faced towards the holes in the box.

Now review the settings as the P should be adjusted on the bottom of the box. Also, make sure that all the wires are fixed accordingly.

It’s very important to check that the ports are aligned with the holes.

Now take out your arcade button from the kit. There should be a spacer, green button, and a nut. Make sure they are not attached to each other if so unscrew them.

Now connect the green button into the top flop of the cupboard. The pushable side will be adjusted upwards so that it can be pressed.

Now screw the button with the spacer and washer to fix it in place.

Step 7

Now, find the lamp and components from the kit. It includes a green lamp, black micro-switch, and black lamp holder.

Now insert the lamp into the holder.

Further, attach the lamp holder to the microswitch available.

Step 10

Now the lamp is completed, next you have to do is to insert this fixed lamp into the green button fixed on the top side of the cardboard.

Step 11

Now you have to lock the lamp in place by rotating it right-ward. It is secure the lamp in the button.

You have previously connected the 4 colored wires on the Voice HAT board. Now find them and attach them to the micro-switch. The color there is the matter of importance; make sure that the colored wires are attached at right points.

Now attach the Microphone board to the cardboard. It will be fixed below the bottom of the top flap. You have to align the microphones with the two holes of the cardboard. Now tape the Microphone board at its place.

Now cross check that all the microphones are aligned with the holes. It is too important. Now close the box.

Now the device is assembled by you. It is ready. Now connect it and boot it up.
